“To be an effective caregiver to others, one must be an effective caretaker of themselves.”
High levels of stress, burnout and compassion fatigue in care homes and hospitals, are associated with a lower implementation of quality care for patients and residents. And best practices in continuing care facilities, such as Dementia Care, Managing responsive behaviors, R.A.I. Coding, Palliative or End of Life Care, PIECES, and GPA (Gentle Persuasive Approach training) are affected negatively resulting in lower morale among staff, a breakdown of teams and higher staff turnovers.
Effective self-care strategies for caregivers will enhance existing long-term care approaches and best practices, by lowering stress levels in the workplace, by educating staff on effective strategies and to help them balance live/work and their overall well-being.
The presentation is based on the following truths.
“Knowledge is power, understanding knowledge is powerful, implementing knowledge is empowering.”
In the first segment of the presentation, participants will be educated on what the differences are between various stressors, burnout, and (compassion) fatigue.
During the second segment of the presentation, the participants will be shown that life is fluid, and in constant motion due to change of circumstance, and by defining life’s different aspects, they will be able to determine where they need to spend higher quality time and create balance in their lives.
In the third segment of the presentation, participants will exercise in two role play formats, in the first exercise they will participate as an observer, or as a resident/patient or as a caregiver, and in the second exercise they will participate as a team member or observer in the workplace
During the third segment of the presentation, the knowledge and the understanding will come to fruition and help them transform their lives both at work and at home with their families.
This will help them understand the difficulties and confusion that come up with once the chain of command is broken or bypassed all together, and how that in the end affects the care of the residents or patients in a negative fashion. This learning will help lower the staff’s stress levels, increase output and productivity, give them insight into the workings of the proper and effective communication channels
